Gharial Research and Conservation Unit (GRACU):
The Gharial Research and Conservation Unit (GRACU) was established in Tikarpada during 1975 as a part of the National Crocodile Conservation Programme (NCCP). The centre is located within the Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary under Satkosia Wildlife Division. It has pioneered various activities relating to conservation and research on Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) and Mugger (Crocodyllus palustris) crocodiles. It is the oldest centre in the country out of a chain of some 37 stations established under the NCCP in different states. The GRACU had initially shown the way for captive rearing of the Gharial and Mugger. The centre has also supplied young crocodiles for rehabilitation in the wild and has also served as an interpretation centre for public education and awareness towards wildlife conservation.
